Halloween at the Marriott

November 7, 2008 by hotelsmart

Last Friday HotelSmart were invited to a Halloween night at the Bournemouth Marriott Hotel. We started with mulled wine on the balcony over looking the cold Bournemouth seafront whilst awaiting other Agents to arrive. Then after that, we had a show round of the newly re-furbished bedrooms.  This was followed by a hot/cold buffet in a private dining room cleverly decorated in an Halloween theme with eerie music playing in the background! We then had a competition called “Pimp my pumpkin” where we had to decorate using their materials our own pumpkins (our team did not win!) Probably due to having had by now quite a few glasses of red wine.

We finished the evening in thir newly refurbished basement pub with a glug of brandy – needless to say we all slept very well that night without a ghost or ghouly appearing in any dreams!

Bournemouth’s ” Gaza Strip “

May 28, 2008 by hotelsmart

It’s True Bournemouth “Gaza Strip” does exist, at least that’s what the locals in the suburb of Charminster call it.

A Bit About Bournemouth

Bournemouth or ” Sunny Bournemouth ” lies around 100 miles south of London on the South Coast of England nearly opposite the Isle of Wight famous for it’s Music Festival and many Yacht Regatta’s.

The Town is home to over 200,000 people which swells by many more thousands at weekends and during the Summer months as it is a well known Resort with many Hotels, Restaurants, and Leisure activities.

At one point in Bournemouth’s history there were more Hotel Bedrooms within it’s boundaries than any other city in Europe outside of London, approximately 30,000 beds.

The Town also benefits by being a Premier English Language Teaching Centre with many schools attracting students from all over the World to learn English.

Where to Go – What to Do

Bournemouth is in the County of Dorset and is an ideal Tourist base. Tourist’s benefit from a 9 mile Sandy Beach and it is also well placed for visits to Salisbury, Stonehenge, Winchester, the New Forest and Dorchester the Famous Market Town residing in whats known as ” Hardy Country “. The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is only 45 minutes away, with over 90 miles of stunning coastline containing fossils 180 million years old recording Earths History.

The weather is so clement Palm trees flourish year round, it’s a very Green Town with many Parks and an abundance of fine Championship Golf Courses. It also benefits from it’s growing International Airport which already services many European Countries with direct flights to major cities and resorts in the Mediterranean.

Nearby is the Sandbanks Penisula which has some of the most Expensive homes in the World, the houses have beautiful views of the Purbeck Hills and across one of the World’s largest and most stunning Natural Harbours anywhere, it provides the perfect environment for sailing and watersports. The mudflats and salt marshes are an ecological paradise for roosting birds.

There are three Theatres, The Pavilion, The Pier Theatre and the Bournemouth International Centre, we also have Multiplex Cinemas, the Russell Coates Museum, an Oceanarium. two Piers, beautiful Gardens and a pedestrianised Shopping area running from the East to the West of the Town joining at the the Town Centre called The Square, which usually has a number of attractions throughout the year culminating in the German Xmas Market. The Town also boasts it’s own large International Conference and Exhibition Cehtre called the B.I.C . At certain times of the year the main Leisure centre has an Ice Rink installed. During the Summer months there is a Free Firework Display near Bournemouth Pier on Friday Nights.

Bournemouth is also one of the Hottest spots in Europe for young people going Clubbing, it is also a firm favourite for Stag and Hen Parties.

Bournemouth was recently voted the Happiest Place to Live in the United Kingdom, it received a vote of over 82% to make first place.

The ” Gaza Strip “

Let me tell you about the ” Strip ” , I have already mentioned the great influx of language students visiting our town, they used to come Spring to Autumn, nowadays the schools are very busy year round such is the demand for English as a language Worldwide. The consequence is of course that Bournemouth has become one of the most truly Cosmopolitan towns in the United Kingdom.

To answer the needs of these new temporary residents the main street in Charminster has burgeoned with Bars, Restaurants, Cafe’s and shops selling Exotic Ethnic foods. Most of the owners of the outlets tend to be from the Middle East with Italians, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish people for balance. Korean,Japanese,Chinese and Asian foodshops are on the increase. It has made the main street a very vibrant and colourful place to eat, drink and shop.

The Bars and Restaurants tend to serve food and drink all day long, you won’t go hungry on the Gaza Strip.
There has, I have noticed a change in the body language and traditional greetings of the English due to the influence of the traders and the students, many more men kiss and hug each other in the street quite readily, I have also noticed more back slapping, and handshaking than would have been seen previously.

All in all, the Gaza has benefitted the community as a whole, also, due to the Smoking ban in shops and bars etc., there are more people on the street and they have adopted an almost bazzar type comradeship, take a ride along the Gaza and notice the number of people calling out to each other with jokes and comments across the street, previously unknown in Conservative England.

Depending which end of the strip you start from the boundaries of the ” Gaza ” are as follows, starting from the North you Have Sinbads Restaurant at the traffic lights, commonly known as ” Kebab Juction and the Corner of the Gaza ” ( this was a genuine instruction to a Taxi driver by a passenger and he was taken straight there ) you reach the end of the strip in the South at Tesco Express, in between these junctions you can Feast on just about any mouthwatering Food you desire.

Restaurants & Bars

I have listed below but a few of the venue’s on the strip, I have also included the nationalities of the owners who have spotted the opportunity to provide services to an extended community, they are to be congratulated for their foresight and capital investment in turning what was a mediocre suburban shopping street into a vibrant experience for all to enjoy.

In no particular order:-

Sebis Brasserie
Iranian Owner

Serves mainly continental food and a varied selection of wines, open til late, very popular in the evenings, gets very busy, mainly due to the efforts of Miguel, Marco, Eistein ( Ali ) Guzel and Ishmael the Boss, all great lads who always have a smile and a welcome for you……..not to mention their wicked Cocktails.

The Nippon Inn
Japanese / English Owner

This little restaurant and bar is run by Steve and his Japanese wife, they are right next door to Sebis and serve some amazing versions of Japanese food resembling Spanish Tapas……nice people

Salsa
Syrian Owner

This small friendly bar restaurant has a reputation for Italian / Spanish food with a fair smattering of Middle Eastern meals. It benefits from having a very sunny Patio were you can while away the time and enjoy eating Garlic Olives, a slice of Pizza and a glass or two of wine whilst watching the antics of the people parading up and down the Gaza. Tariq is mine host and will always give you the time day.

Peppino’s
Iranian Owner

Serves  mainly Italian food and wines together with that lovely Peroni beer, open til late, very popular in the evenings, gets very busy, they have great Jazz nights and always do their best to provide lively entertainment.

Sala Pepe
Iranian Owner

A great Italian Restaurant operated by the lovely Nikki the owners wife, upmarket food and drink for the discerning, just wish they opened at lunchtime again.

San Lorenzo’s
Italian Owner

Certainly the most famous Italian restaurant on the strip, very friendly, and abley run by Ann and Lorenzo for many years. This restaurant has a very long association with the Soccer fraternity having hosted many dinners for the professional Footballers when they have come to compete in the town

You also have the following to choose from:-

Havana’s Night Club……………..The Vibe Nightclub……….Bar Zuka……. Retro……….San Miguel………Baraca………Damascus…….Bedouin……Pasa

Mr Falafael….. STOP PRESS….Soon to be opened by an Englishman wil be an ” American Diner ” ah but he is half Italian…God Bless.

All of these Venues and this is by no means a complete list are owned or operated by the following nationalities.

Lebanese, Israeli, Turkish, Morroccan, Palestinian, French Algerian………..these great people have made the Gaza Strip what it is today, Many Thanks.

The Sad Part

I have a sad observation to make, there is only One Pub on the Gaza, it’s called the Richmond Arms, what a state the Brewery has let it get into, it has one of the biggest Gardens of any pub locally and borders a least 100 feet of the Strip separated only by dingy railings. This once happy and vibrant community Pub is now in a disgraceful state of decor. The opportunity to be a Showcase on this thriving street and to attract back a bountiful customer base is being ignored. Given the effort our Middle Eastern friends have put in ( Quality Too )…….The Brewery should be ashamed.

A Good Part

One last thing for the first time this year an Event known as the Bournemouth Sevens will be staged at the Sports facilites near the Airport ,31st May and 1st June 2008,  I have copied some information below should any readers be interested.

Charlie’s Angels – NO – We’re Gordies Angels

May 23, 2008 by hotelsmart

Yup, that’s right we’re not Charlie’s Angels – NO – We’re Gordies Angels and we work for Hotelsmart Conference and Accommodation Booking Agents  where “Gordie” ( Gordon Forrester ) is the Managing Director.

We accept missions that even Tom Cruise or the Angels would fear to tread.

Let me introduce ourselves:-

My name is Kim ( one of the Blondes ) and I am the National Key Account Manager, responsible for Group Accommodation in Hotels, Conferences & Exhibition’s.

My name is Jo ( the Brunette ) and I specialise in Events, Conferences, and I am a Great Wedding Planner.

My name is Barbara ( the other Blonde ) I am the Office Manager, I’am the one with the sexy voice, I keep them on their toes, I can do everything.

Unlike the other Angels we don’t carry Guns we carry years of experience in finding the right solutions at the right price for our Clients.

Our Missions are to Slueth the Travel and Hotel Booking Industry for the best available deals in Hotels, Conference Centres and Exciting Locations in which to hold Meetings, Product Launches, Exhibitions and Events.

We present our findings to our Clients and after consultation with them create a shortlist, we then arrange Familiarisation Trips to further check the Ambience and Suitabilty of the locations.Once the the exact Venue is chosen we assist our Clients in the drawing up of a Contract with the Venue to their mutual benefit which all contributes to running a worry free and Succesful Event.

When not tracking down our Quarry we have the delicious job of Travelling on Familiarisation trips to evaluate and sometimes re-evaluate properties that may be suitable for our Clients future Events.

This weekend Gordon, Barbara and Jo are going to a newly refurbished Hotel called the Harte & Garter Hotel & Spa overlooking Windsor Castle, the invitation is entitled ” Live Like a Queen “.
We will have the opportunity to inspect Royal Windsor Town which is quaint and has some great shopping, we are also very close to Old Father Thames should we decide to go boating in our free time.

If we don’t go shopping the suggestion is that we can make use of the Spa or just relax in  our Luxurious bedrooms.

The evening will start with drinks in the Tower Brasserie at 7.30pm followed by dinner in the hotel restaurant, ( chance to check out Cuisine and Service ) things get worse, in the morning Barbara & Jo are have a neck and shoulder massage, this will be after a Full English Breakfast …..of course. We will then wend our way back home to “Sunny Bournemouth” where we are based to enjoy the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend with our families.

Newly introduced on this Fam Trip will be that each of us are going to write articles from 3 different perspectives, Conference Hotel Suitability, Single Female Traveller, Disabled / Eco Friendliness these will be posted on WordPress and of course our own site www.hotelsmart.co.uk under our Travel Tips Section.

In conclusion should you want us to undertake a Mission for You……….just call ” Gordies Angels ” with our next ” Dangerous Assignment “

Oh and I nearly forgot to mention, our services are Free of charge to our Clients…..

Kim Taylor

PS.  To have you’re Venue or Destination reviewed …call the ” Angels ” or you can link to us or send Articles for submission to our Travel Tips section for inclusion.
The real dangerous Missions are undertaken by “Charlie” sorry “Gordie” himself, in the past he has had to endure covert insertions to places like Rio de Janeiro, Las Vegas, Rome, Paris, Canada, Thailand, Singapore and Dubai to name but a few, White Water Rapids, Huskies, Helicopters over Iguazu Falls……a ” Mere Bagatelle “ says “Gordie” ..he can’t wait for the next Mission.

Convention Organiser has more Time to Play Golf

Here is some sound advice for people who need to book 10 or more people into a Hotel. Try Using a Hotel Booking Agent, believe it or not these guys are much better than the Internet for block bookings.

Big Companies and Government Departments use Hotel Booking Agents as opposed to Travel Agents to get Massive Discounts for their people whilst at Work, Leisure, Conferencing and Training or as part of an Incentive Scheme.

Most members of the Public don’t know that this type of agent exists,( they do, they do,) These, lets call them Hotelroom Brokers, will deal in thousands of Hotel bookings everyday and you can share in their Spare capacity simply by contacting them with your enquiry.

The service should be Free of charge as they derive their income by commission from the Venue, they should not be affiliated to any one Group of Hotels allowing them the freedom to scour all of their contacts to get you the very best rates. They should write the contract for you, arrange the payment procedures and copy you in on all correspondence. As a rule they will not take any payments from you but arrange for all monies be paid direct to your chosen venue. You will receive the bill allowing you to check that the rates they quoted to you are exactly what you get, with no hidden extra’s.

Hotel Groups and Independent Hotels owners Worldwide appreciate the input and importance of these agents as part of their Marketing Mix and are therefore happy to give them outstanding rates.

Whatever you have to organise for a group of people be it for Business, a Sporting Event, Leisure, Education or just a Big Family Get together then consider the cost savings and expert advice you could obtain by using Hotelsmart.A good agent will carry out this service for you with no obligation and no contract should be considered unless you request it.

Hotelsmart also provide an online booking service as well having databases on Hotels for the Disabled and their Carers, equally so Eco Friendly Hotels are becoming more desirable due to the public’s growing awareness of Carbon Footprints.

Some of the Benefits:

  • You have more time with your Clients / Friends
  • Shortlist of the right Venues to choose from
  • Expert help from a reliable source
  • Value for Money
  • Transparent Service
  • Peace of Mind and a Successful Event

Why not try one of these Powerful Agents when you next need to book for a group, you can talk to real people who truly understand the Industry and are only too happy to provide you with a solution.

You can contact me direct with any enquiry.

Familiarisation Trip

April 22, 2008 by hotelsmart

My name is Kim Taylor and I work for HotelSmart – actually I have worked there for over 12 years and I must tell you about my fabulous familiarisation trip – for those of you who do not work in the travel industry a fam trip is when a venue has recently refurbished or changed hands etc and they want travel agents to come and see for theirselves so they can then sell onto to their clients.  It is much easier to do this when you have seen something first hand.

So I was invited by Principal Hayley Group to view their accusation of the St David’s Spa Hotel in Cardiff Bay.  When I got there they offered my sister and myself a complimentary drink whilst getting ready and then we had a gorgeous dinner in the restaurant.  The room we were allocated was fit for a popstar – we thought we were one of the WAGs for the weekend – we were given a suite with stunning views over Cardiff Bay and with 2 separate balconies it was truly amazing.

In the morning we went on a high speed boat around the bay where we got soaked but it was completely exhilerating and that was followed by a supposedly ‘light lunch’ which was amazing with freshly made breads, loads of different cheeses and meats and more!

The afternoon was our own and we were too full and tired to do anything but sit on the balcony looking out over the bay, then there was a knock on the door and we were presented with freshly made Welsh cakes and a cup of tea – yes we ate them it would have been rude not to!!

In the evening we went down for an early dinner and the menu was carved onto a slate tile, we had a photograph taken with the MD of the group Tony Troy and then sat down to eat a pre-show dinner.  We then went off to the new Millenniuem Stadium to watch a tribute band to Take That which was fab.

On return to the hotel we had the cheese and dessert courses accommanied by fine wines. Finally when we reached the bedroom on the Sat night the photograph was on the bed in a lovely frame as was the menu in slate for us to take away as a momemtum. Sunday after a glorious breakfast we headed back to our hime town sunny Bournemouth – probably a couple of pounds heavier then when we left!

Thanks to you Principal-hayley for a truly wonderful fam trip  and I have been on many – this was the best one I have ever experienced!
